When I was a student at the University of Southern California in Los
Angeles, California, I studied PNF with Ms. Margaret Knott. She
came to
our university to teach us her theories and techniques. Several of
us went to
Vallejo, California for a clinical affiliation. When the affiliation
was
finished, we all studied PNF together at the college. After graduation,
I
used PNF on many of my patients where I worked as a physical therapist.
In
1969, I came to Kochi, Japan and taught all my students at the Kochi
Rehabilitation Gakuen about PNF, in addition to many other techniques.
The students used the PNF techniques for their patients on their
hospital
affiliations. At that time, the therapists had heard the name
PNF, but no
one knew how to do it and were very interested in it. The therapists
and
doctors asked my students what they were doing and where they had learned
it. The students told them that I had taught them, and, before
I knew it
many people were calling me and asking me to come and teach them PNF.
It
was quite a surprise, because I did not know that so many people were
interested in learning PNFand did not know how to do it. I was
first
asked to go to Kobe to teach. Many, many therapists and doctors
came to see and
learn. Dr. Sawamura of the Hyogo Rehabilitation Center was my
translator,
because I could not speak Japanese at that time. Dr. Ueda came
from the
Tokyo University Hospital to explain all the theories and philosophies.
I
also was asked to teach in Okayama and Tokyo. It was after that
PNF
became very popular in Japan.
When Mr. Eric Viel came to Japan to teach physical therapy at the Fuchu
Rehabilitation School, he was the second person to teach and use PNF
in
Japan. We had many discussions together about how useful PNF is.
In
addition, Mr. Viel and Dr. Nakamura did several research projects on
PNF.
All the Fuchu students learned all about PNF from Mr. Viel and me:
for
example, Mr. Yanagisawa, Mr. Imai, Mr. Arai, Mr. Yamamoto, etc.
Many
therapists have also gone to Vallejo, California to take the courses
offered there on PNF. Many of the Vallejo therapists have also
come to Japan to
advance our knowledge. I have also done some translating for them.
Since
that time, I have continued to teach and have done several research
studies on PNF, along with several other therapists. We now have
the Japanese PNF
Academy and are expanding the learnings to as many people as possible.
ロス･アンジェルスの南カリフォルニア大学在籍中、Ms.Margaret.KnottはPNFの理論と技術の指導を行いに我々の大学に来ており、私は生徒の一人として学んだ。PNF受講学生の何人かはCalifornia,Vallejoの彼女の病院に臨床実習にいった。その後、受講生全員がPNFの講義を大学で受講した。卒業後、理学療法士として多くの患者にPNFを施行した。1969年、PNFとその他多くの技術指導のため、高知リハビリテーション学園に私は来日した。生徒たちはPNF技術を実習病院で施行した。その当時、セラピストはPNFという名は知っていても、誰もどのように行うのかは知らず、非常に学生の技術に興味を持った。セラピストや医師が彼らに何をしているのか、どこで学んだのかを尋ね、私から学んだということを知った。その事実を私が学生から知らされる前に、多くの人々からPNFを指導しに来て欲しいと依頼された。こんなにも多くの人がPNFの習得に関心を持ち、どのようにするのか知らないことを知ったのは大きな驚きであった。私が最初にPNF指導へ出向いたのは神戸であった。たくさんの、本当にたくさんのセラピストや医師が学習に訪れた。当時、私が日本語を話せなかったため兵庫県立総合リハビリテーションセンターの澤村誠志医師が通訳を担当し、理論と原理の説明には東京大学医学部付属病院から上田敏医師が来た。岡山や東京でもまた指導を依頼された。日本でPNFが非常に盛んになり始めたころだった。
Mr.Eric Vielが府中リハビリテーション学校に理学療法を指導しに来日し、彼は日本でPNFの指導と使用を行った第二の人となった。私たちは有効なPNFとはどういうものか、と多くのディスカッションを行い、Mr.Ericと東京都神経科学総合研究所の中村隆一医師はPNFにおけるいくつかのresearch projectを行った。府中リハビリテーション学校の全生徒が私とMr,Ericの各々からPNFについて学んだ。その中には柳澤(Mr,Eric)、今井(Mr,Eric)、新井、山元などがいた。その後、多くのセラピストがCaliforunia,Vallejoのコースを受講しに行った。Vallejoのセラピストも日本のPNFの知識向上のために日本に訪れている。私は彼らの通訳を行ったことがある。その当時からPNFにおける研究リサーチや、指導も何人かのセラピストとともに続けている。私たちは、日本PNF研究会を結成しており、できる限り多くの人々に対してPNFの学習する機会を広めている。
